Animal welfare experts are concerned at the number of kittens being born into lives of severe disease, neglect and starvation every year particularly in urban areas of Melbourne.

The relaunch of the collaborative ‘Who’s for Cats’ campaign aims to address this issue. Animal Aid, in conjunction with The Lost Dogs’ Home, RSPCA Victoria, Cat Protection Society and Lort Smith Animal Hospital will desex and microchip a ‘semi-owned’ cat at a heavily discounted fee for people who are willing to take full ownership of the cat.
 
Victoria has an estimated unowned (stray and feral) cat population of over half a million, which is totally unacceptable from an animal welfare perspective.

Unowned cats suffer from poor health and have an average life expectancy of around 2 to 3 short years. Left to fend for themselves, malnutrition, violence and disease is their lot.
 
Semi-owned cats differ from unowned cats in that they are fed by caring people and may be friendlier to humans. However these semi-owned cats suffer the same illnesses, accidents and outcomes as unowned cats.

In order to reduce the number of kittens born in to a life of suffering on the streets, this coalition of animal welfare organisations is calling on the residents of Victoria to ‘stop feeding a bigger problem’ and take full ownership of the stray cats they are feeding by having them desexed and microchipped.
