Bushfire Update - 27/02/09 Print E-mail

Today’s forecast has had every one on edge as to how the day will progress. Regardless of how the day manifests, we will be there and at the ready to deal with any eventuality. Rather than dwell on what might happen I thought it would be a good idea to focus on something positive. This update high lights one of the burns patients currently convalescing in our clinic.

Patient update: Happy, Blue Heeler x, admitted 8th February 2009

Happy (originally known to us as Bella) the little Blue Heeler x came to us the day after Black Saturday, she was rescued from a burning house in the Narbethong area. Our hearts just went out to her; she had burns to all four of her feet, smoke inhalation and several other burns to her body. Over the next week we gave her fluids and nursed her carefully, she was in a pretty bad way.

You may have seen Happy in the Herald Sun on the 16th of February pictured with Dr Jo Steuten from our Vet Clinic and she also features on the link to these updates. About a week later we finally found her owner, who has had a very tough time indeed, the one thing that has made his situation seem a bit brighter is that he knows that his Happy is safe and in good hands.

Happy has also spent some time at Boronia Vet Hospital and at the Melbourne University Veterinary Hospital. We thank them both for their efforts in making sure she had what ever she needed and at no cost.

Happy is now back with us at Animal Aid and is doing as well as can be expected. We will change her dressings, bathe her wounds and make her as comfortable as possible while her Dad is busy organising where they will live. She has a long way to go and skin grafts have not yet been ruled out, though we are hoping they will not be necessary. We will keep you posted as to her progress and how our other patients are doing in future updates.
