RUV4206A Carry out pound procedures

This unit is of particular relevance to individuals involved in Animal Control and Regulation and those who work in shelters and pounds.

This unit of competency covers the process of providing appropriate management of impounded and surrendered animals including receiving animals, assessing their health and temperament, maintaining pound hygiene, quarantine procedures and infection control, providing the appropriate level of care for animals, undertaking appropriate procedures to reunite lost pets with their owners and discharging animals.

Participants will be introduced to and trained in the use of relevant equipment, including protective clothing. Participants will also gather information on the animals received, process documentation and ensure that appropriate records are kept. Pound hygiene and infection control measures will be detailed. The daily care and maintenance of impounded animals will be covered, and participants will be given tools to help them calculate the requirements to run and budget for pound operation.

Participants will also receive training in recognising signs of ill-health, so that an affected animal may receive veterinary care. The preparation of the animals for discharge will be covered, including microchipping and desexing, along with all relevant documentation and record keeping practices and relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.

Practical sessions will include performing pound cleaning procedures to the required standard, (for both cats and dogs) admitting, processing and discharging animals to members of the public. Financial processes such as cash handling and receipting will also be covered where appropriate. Various scenarios will be enacted in classroom sessions to facilitate planning for periods of peak demand and a disease outbreak. These sessions will encourage group communication and the use of external resources such as chemical hazard sheets and veterinary advice.

Throughout the unit OHS issues will be covered to ensure the participants are aware of potential risks and can act in order to mitigate them in their working life. These risks include zoonotic infection, handling of toxic chemicals and risk of an animal bite or kick from a large animal.

Both units are offered at Animal Aid, Killara Rd , Coldstream (Melways 281 F7)
