RUV4203A Identify and respond to animal behaviour

This unit is relevant to anyone who interacts routinely with domestic animals in the course of their employment.

It teaches participants to recognise and identify animals by species, breed, type and group and how to use reference materials and equipment to do so. Participants will also be able to describe an individual animal using objective parameters and practice using appropriate equipment to do so. They will also learn how to assess, interpret, anticipate and respond to the behaviour of dogs, cats and large animals that they are likely to encounter during employment, by reading physical and behavioural cues. Participants will gain an understanding of how their own body language and behaviour can affect an interaction with an animal, both positively and negatively. Participants will gain an understanding of how various behavioural patterns develop, enabling participants to solve the root of the problem effectively rather than the symptom. This knowledge will equip participants not only to perform their duties as safely as possible, but having gained a fuller understanding of behaviour, will be able to apply their learning to a wider variety of situations than those covered explicitly during the course. Participants will learn how to describe the temperament, health and wellbeing of the animal and assess the physical and social environment where animals are kept. They will also receive guidelines as to when to refer behavioural and health issues onto to appropriate specialists. Statutory responses will be discussed as will all relevant organisational and legislative requirements.

During the course of this unit participants will handle animals and practice new handling skills, utilise identification equipment and apply their problem solving skills to situations encountered. Competencies will be evaluated with a mixture of classroom and practical activities that relate to the assessment of animal behaviour. This unit will also cover aspects of the relationships between owner – animal –environment that influences animal behaviour in our community. Working within animal control and regulation also requires knowledge of relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures. Throughout the unit OHS issues will be covered to ensure the participants are aware of potential risks and can act in order to mitigate them in their working life.

For professions other than Animal Control Officers, the livestock component of this unit is optional.

The Livestock component is offered at a separate location.

Both units are offered at Animal Aid, Killara Rd , Coldstream (Melways 281 F7)
